I've seen the "pilot" test cartoon they did for "The Real Gostbusters", in which Slimer was one of the opponent ghosts. With respect to the series, I think it would have been more interesting if Slimer had been more the "Dr. Smith" and less the "Scrappy-Doo" of the series, actively -- or coincidentally -- causing bigger menaces for the boys to take care of while he ran around free.
